Kaunas (or Kovno) has always had an active Jewish community. Historically a significant part of Kaunas elite were Jews: architects, businessmen, traders, and artists. Their lives inscribed a number of stories and traces visible in the architecture of the city. Kaunas is also renowned for an incredible story how Dutch and Japanese diplomats conspired to save hundreds of Jewish lives in the 1940s.

Kaunas Jewish tour includes

Neo-Baroque Kaunas synagogue, still used by an active religious community.
Two former synagogues that served different forms of Judaism.
Chiyune Sugihara house where a Japanese consul saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust.
Locations where Jewish artists, architects and traders of Kaunas lived and worked (and their life stories).
Monuments to the Jews of Kaunas.
• And more...

If you could make it mid morning as we will be staying in Vilnius and will need a train to Kaunas

  5. May be coming in August 2018. would like to get information on sources for family history records or files available to research. My family come from Pilviskiai/Pilvishok. Are there sources in Kaunas or where would I be likely to find such documents?

    • There are multiple archives in Lithuania, depending on what records you’d like to search. There is Kaunas regional archive about the Kaunas area (if your family ever lived there; you mention they are from Pilviškiai), there are also several archives in Vilnius (the capital) where information may also be located. Our Kaunas tour may be customized to include a visit to the Kaunas regional archive together with an archive specialist, who could help you with the search. We offer Vilnius tours as well.

    • Gary- Did you visit Pilviskiai? It is my ancestral ‘hometown’ and I have info/pictures to share if you’re interested.

    • Gary- Pilviskiai is my ancestral ‘hometown’ too. Have info to share. Contact me cmarks2701@southslope.net

  6. hi I am a single person and would love to have this tour on thursday the 7/2/19. can you send me the prices just for a one person tour? thank you

    • The tours are all private and the guide has to work the same regardless of the number of persons ordering the tour, therefore, unfortunately, the number of people makes no difference in price.

  7. Hello,
    – Can you accommodate four of us on the tour?
    – We’ll be coming from Vilnius, what is the best way to travel to and from Kaunas?
    – I checked the train schedule, and it looks like the earliest w can get to Kaunas is about noon.
    – Do you pick up at the train?
    – How close is the train station to the center of town?
    – Do you have availability on July 5, 2019?
    THANK YOU, Ora

    • We are interested in a response to the questions above. Thank You.

    • Regarding availability, we will answer you by e-mail you provided.

In general, yes, we have private tours for four people. Trains to Kaunas come in the morning as well. However, the main train station of Kaunas is currently closed for Vilnius trains and trains terminate at the suburbs (Palemonas). Therefore, it may be more convenient to go by bus, which go every 15 minutes all day and goes right to the center. We may pick up at the bus station.

      • Thank You for writing to us and for the helpful information. We are looking forward to your email with information about availability on July 5. Do you know when the first bus leaves Vilnius and when the last leaves Kaunas? We are having difficulty finding this information. . Thank You!

  8. Are these tours still available?

  9. I am a social studies teacher from Virginia and will be visiting Lithuania as part of an Holocaust Education trip I have planned to learn more about the roles both bystanders and upstanders played in the Holocaust. Would you send me information including costs for your Kaunas Jewish tour which includes the Sugihara house. I will be staying in Kaunas June 6th, 7th, and June 8th, and leaving late the night of June 9th of this year 2023. I also wanted to see if there are any guides that would be able to do private tours and what the cost would be. I do some work for a Holocaust survivor from Kaunas, Lithuania. He and his family escaped from the Kovno Ghetto and were hidden by a farmer and his family in Lithuania in one of their potato holes. If possible, I would like to be able to see some of the places he speaks of, which I can share with you once you contact me.

    • I have not received a response to my message yesterday, which I am placing below again.
